Sending Love: Starlight’s February Food Drive Makes a Big Impact

March 24, 20264 min read

At Starlight Productions, we believe the arts build more than strong voices, confident performers, and creative thinkers — they build compassionate humans. This February, our Starlight families proved just how powerful a community can be when it comes together with heart.

Throughout the month, we hosted our very first “Sending Love: Food Drive”, collecting non-perishable and shelf-safe items for local families in need. What started as a simple idea quickly grew into something truly extraordinary.

By the end of the month, Starlight families and community members had donated 221 pounds of food and essential items.

Two hundred and twenty-one pounds.

That’s not just a number. That’s shelves filled. That’s meals provided. That’s love in action.

A Sweet Incentive (With an Even Sweeter Outcome)

If you know anything about our studio culture, you know that Starlight private students receive a small piece of candy after each lesson — a simple tradition that adds a little extra joy to their week.

For February, we added a fun twist.

Students who brought in items for the food drive received an extra piece of candy.

It was such a small thing — just one more treat — but it became a big motivator. Week after week, students proudly walked in carrying cans, boxes, pasta, cereal, toiletries, and even pet supplies. Some brought a single item. Others brought entire bags.

What meant the most wasn’t the incentive — it was the ownership. Students understood they were helping real families. They were contributing. They were sending love.

And it showed.

221 Pounds Later…

When it came time to deliver the donations to VEAP, I truly didn’t realize just how much we had collected.

Until I tried to fit it all in my car.

Every inch of space was filled. Boxes stacked high. Bags tucked into corners. It was one of those moments where you step back and think, Wow… we did this.

When I arrived at VEAP, the incredibly kind volunteer who came out to help me took one look inside the car and was completely shocked.

Her reaction made everything feel even more real.

She helped unload everything — and it took two full carts to bring it all inside.

Two carts.

That’s what 221 pounds of generosity looks like.

The Dog Food Moment We’ll Never Forget

While we were unloading, I shared a little about Starlight — how we’re a theatre and music studio, how this drive was primarily student-raised, and how I hope to make the “Sending Love” Food Drive an annual tradition.

She casually mentioned, “You know, you can always let people know we accept dog food too.”

I smiled.

Because I then got to say, “We actually have some.”

And then I pulled out five large bags of dog food that had been donated.

Her face completely lit up.

She told me they had just run out — and that those bags were going straight onto the shelves.

Out of everything that day, that moment might have hit the hardest.

Because it reminded me that sometimes what feels like “extra” to us is exactly what someone else is desperately needing.

Why Community Service Matters in the Arts

At Starlight, we focus on building confident performers — but we also care deeply about building compassionate leaders.

Participating in a community food drive teaches students:

  • Generosity

  • Awareness

  • Responsibility

  • Gratitude

  • Leadership through action

The arts give students a voice. Community service teaches them how to use it.

The “Sending Love” Food Drive wasn’t just about food. It was about showing our students that even small actions — like bringing a can of soup — can create real change.

Thank You, Starlight Families

This drive would not have been possible without:

  • Our private students

  • Our group class families

  • Community members who dropped off donations

  • And every single person who spread the word

You filled my car.
You filled two carts.
And most importantly, you helped fill shelves for families in need.

That’s what Starlight is about.

We’re Making This a Tradition

After seeing the impact of this first drive, there’s no question:

“Sending Love” will now be an annual Starlight tradition.

Next year, we’ll aim even higher than 221 pounds.

Because when a theatre community comes together, incredible things happen.

If you’re looking for a performing arts studio that values not only excellence in voice, piano, theatre, and performance — but also character, leadership, and community impact — we’d love to welcome you to Starlight.

Together, we create.
Together, we perform.
And together, we give back. 💛
